  In the beatitudes ( Matthew 5:3-10 ) Jesus teaches about the values that will make the people blessed, or in this context, experience a Godly happiness. These are things that should be present in the life of a believer. Over time the beatitudes has become something that many people know on face value, but if we go deeper, we see that this sermon has so much to teach us about what God expects and what it means to be a true representative of the Lord. We will use the next few weeks to look at each of and we should ask ourselves whether we see any of these virtues in  our selves The Poor In Spirit   ( Matthew 5:3 ) The Original Greek word for poor was pto chos  which means to be reduced to begging. Hebrews 4:2 says,  'For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.' (NKJV) In this verse, we hear of many people hearing the gospel, however, the impact it had was not the same with everyone. This was not because of the quality of the preaching or because those hearing didn't understand. It was simply because those who saw no change in their life did not listen in faith. When the word of God is applied with faith, great things take place. We see this in the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 . Everyone in the army of Israel would have heard of the great things that God had done for them and the promises they were still yet to see, but all they could focus on was the great Goliath. David, however, didn't see a mighty warrior, his focus was on the Lord, and the fact that they were God's chosen people. He had not only heard of the great things that ...

In our last post , we looked at what it means to walk in the spirit. Now let's look at the benefits of walking in the spirit We won't gratify the flesh:   Galatians 5:16-17    The only way to avoid walking in the flesh is to walk in the Spirit. The flesh wants to dominate but we can deny it its pleasure by walking in the spirit.  God's word is the spirit, and when we feed on it the flesh will be too weak to dominate us. We get peace: Peace comes from within us and the only way we can experience peace, is when we walk in the spirit, John 14:27 . Sometimes, when our mind is centred on the wrong thing, instead of Gods word, it makes us lose our peace. However, by walking in the spirit, we have peace even though the world is upside down. Peace is in the spirit. Our faith is put into action: Our faith works when we walk in the spirit. It is essential that we know that faith doesn't work with our senses. God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). If we lack knowledge of God's word we can't worship him, because he is a spirit. We also can't walk in the Spirit if we lack knowledge of him. God is Spirit and the father of all spirits ( Hebrews 12:9 ) Weather we like it or not, we are either walking in the flesh or in the Spirit. There's no middle ground. We can't have one foot in the world and the other in God's Kingdom, it's all or nothing. Some may find this difficult to comprehend because they don't know what it means to walk in the spirit or why it is important.  How do you walk in the spirit? But you must subdue it and be its master.” Genesis 4:7 (NLT) The story of Cain and Abel is a well known one. These brothers each brought an offering to the Lord, one was accepted and the other not. Having his offering being rejected caused Cain to become angry. He couldn't believe that God would reject what he had presented, pride was at the root of this anger and God gave him the opportunity to not allow this to over take him. In asking Cain why he was angry, the Lord wanted to show him the danger that lay ahead if he gave into what he was feeling.  The Lord made it clear that he was justified in his rejection of Cain's offering because it was not done well. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him,      thick clouds dark with water. Out of the brightness before him      hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds. Psalms 18:11-12 God was hidden from sight within the darkness of the clouds, but even there he still shinned bright. Verse 12 says that the brightness was before him, meaning that though he was covered by dark clouds, for him it was still bright. He still commanded all that was around him, verse 12 also refers to the clouds as being his, God wasn't overcome in darkness, he put the clouds there to hide himself. We don't always see what God does, sometimes the trials of life can be like a canopy and at other times God hides himself. This is when we need to put our faith into action and know that he is still in control. In these two verses we see that God continued to work behind the scenes. 1 Peter 1:10-12 The prophets of the OT knew that something great was to happen, but not everything about Christ's victory over death (the how and when) had been revealed to them. They did, however, know that the messages they were speaking were not just for the people pf their time but also for all believers to come. These messages are now ministered to us through men and women of God, today. It is the same Spirit working in them, that worked in the prophets. Only we get to see and experience the results of Christ's suffering and glory. We are in such a privileged position, because we have the word, we have the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit, we live in the promise of a victory that has already been realised. The prophets could only imagine, but we don't have to. Don't take for granted what you have before you, we have so many resources regarding God's word and his kingdom, we have the ability to come to the Lord as we are, without having to go through any ceremonia...
