Don't Limit God

Philippians 4:19 tells us that God will meet our needs according to his riches. To fully understand what this means we have to understand who and what God is. God is infinite and must be seen as having no limits. Whenever we think of him as having limits, he is no longer God. He becomes a man-made god, like a statue that doesn't move.

The only way to think of God is as being boundless in all that he is and does. He is not bound by time and space, he can see the beginning and the end. As humans, the concept of an infinite God is hard to understand (Psalm 147:5). Everything we see has a limited lifespan, so thinking of someone as being limitless is difficult.

Psalm 119:96 speaks of perfection, a worldly perfection, however, perfection in this world is not real perfection. It has its own limitations. In his commentary, Matthew Henry uses three examples to illustrate how worldly perfection is meaningless.

Goliath was seen as the perfect man of war, but David overcame him. In 2 Samuel 2:18 Asahel was referred to as being swift of foot, but he was taken down by Abner whilst he was chasing him. Also, Absalom was famed for his handsomeness, but his hair is what led him to be killed. David (who is thought to be the author of this Psalm) saw these people who were placed on a pedestal for one reason or another fall. Their perfection came to an end.

But God’s word never ends, it is broad and has no limits. It reaches all time and circumstances.

His generosity can only be limited by the one he is giving to. If water from a 1ltr jug is poured into a teacup, the teacup can only contain a fraction of the water. We can see this in 2 Kings 4:1-6; the oil didn't stop flowing because there was no more left, it stopped flowing because there was a lack of vessels for the oil to be poured into.

God has so much to give but we have little room to receive it. Get rid of some of the junk inside and make more room for him.

To be continued...
