Overcoming Unbelief

What is unbelief?

Unbelief is believing something other than what God's word said about a particular situation. Many Christians think that just because they are saved, go to church regularly, believe that Jesus Christ died for their sins, and was raised from the dead, they can't walk in unbelief. In fact, some Christians walk in unbelief more than those who are not believers.

Why is belief so important? Because if one doesn't believe in God's word, we can't see the impossible become possible. Mark 9:23 says all things are possible to him that believes. God has called us into the realm where all things are possible through him when will believe in him alone.

Believing in God is what sets believers apart from the lost and dying world. The ways we can overcome unbelief are:

1. Constantly feeding on God's word in order to know his will. Romans 10:17, ignorance is the devil's playground. As long the devil can keep us from knowing God's word, he has us. A lack of knowledge results in unbelief and the devil is there to take advantage, telling you, you're sick, broke, depressed and a failure.

2 Corinthians 4:4. Satan is overruled by the word of God. By knowing God's word we stand against his claims. But if we don't know we will buy what the devil is selling and stay right where we are.
Our heart and mind must tally together when we are asking and believing in God for healing, breakthrough, prosperity etc. (James 1:5-8, Mark 11:24).

Even if you confess all the promises of God and you stagger at the promises of God by believing what your body and present situation says instead of the word of God, you have slipped into unbelief. Unbelief can still show in the way we talk either consciously or unconsciously.

2.  Rejecting fear. Philippians 4:6, The basis of unbelief is fear. If we don't deal with it, it will begin to work in our mind and we will begin to question the word of God.

It's impossible to worry and trust in God at the same time. Worry is a form of unbelief. Worry can cause us to doubt God's love and his ability to come through for us when we need him (Matt 6:25-34). Our thoughts make us doubt God even to the point where we can take things into our own hands.

You worry, believing that you, and not God, are in charge. You may be feeling sick and the doctor has given you some bad news that makes you worry about what to do next.

Job 3:25 reminds us that we can't worry, and at the same time, trust God. When you worry you don't believe what God can do. As a result, you try to do things by your own effort. The bible states that he that believes has ceased from his own work and enters God's rest, (Hebrews 4:10) and this is the only way we can enter God's rest.
